Jezebel Supports Ebony Williams’ Murderer

I’ve spent a lot of time today thinking about a child who died over twenty years ago. Her name was Ebony Williams. Had she lived, she would be just a few years younger than me. However, in 1993, Ebony Williams was raped, her throat slit, her body stuffed into a cardboard box and burnt beneath a bridge.

She was raped and murdered by two men. Both were convicted, and Ebony Williams is still dead.

I don’t know how often you’re around thirteen year olds, but I’ve spent some time working with this age group. Their brains are cleaved in half – one half child, one half young adult. You can have grown up conversations with them, and you can also easily engage them in word search puzzles and sock puppets.

In form, in thought, they straddle two worlds.

Those of us who lived long enough to be an adolescent might remember this state of being. And those of us who remember, remember how much it sucks.

Adolescence sucked for me, and I was a well-cared for, white child growing up in an affluent suburb, attending a nice private school. And still, adolescence sucked.

Imagine then (or maybe you don’t need to), how much more it would suck to be adolescent and discarded – homeless, unkempt, hungry. Her teachers remember that she “always smelled badly” – evidence of neglect. Others remember that she had a “pretty smile,” which is a detail we always remember about girls who we have paid absolutely no attention to.

Honestly, I can’t even think about this child’s demise without a lump in my throat.

Ebony Williams’ case is not an isolated incident. Men often prey upon, rape, and murder girl children. Recently, major media outlets released the stomach churning audio of Subway Spokesperson Jared Fogle explaining how he would groom children in order to rape them, singling out the “girl from the broken home.” Men, not just Fogle, target girls who are already somehow marginalized, somehow wounded, knowing that these are the very girls society is most willing to dispose of, the way in 1993, two gang affiliated men, literally disposed of thirteen year old Ebony Williams.

The existence, the prevalence of such crimes in a civilized society should make our stomachs turn, should make it impossible to sleep, should fill us with rage. Frankly, to live with the knowledge of such horrific events, should render us in a perpetual state of vomiting and weeping.

So why am I writing about this? I’m writing about this because just when I thought liberal feminist media could not sink any fucking lower, Jezebel published, yesterday, a fawning interview with a child murderer and rapist, who is male, and who now “identifies” as a woman. See, we’re supposed to feel sympathy for this man because he feels he is a woman and he feels the conditions of his imprisonment are unfair and because he feels he has been treated unfairly by women who point out that he is a murderer and rapist.

(Trust me — they’ll do the same for Jared Fogle if and when he decides to come out as trans, and you’ll be a filthy transphobe if you disprove of their support of trans-Fogle.)

Let me be more precise: WOMEN are supposed to FEEL SORRY for a man who participated in the rape and murder of a female child because this man now feels like a woman.

I wonder if he “felt like a woman” when he was cleaning up after the murder of Ebony Williams. Or if he “felt like a woman” when he was smirking in the courtroom during the trial. Or did he first “feel like a woman” when he embarked on a storybook romance with the Zodiac Killer? (Google the latter, I’m not linking to any of this shit.) Or did he really, truly “feel like a woman” when Jezebel, a two-bit “feminist” website featured him as part of some “human rights” story?

In the whole of the Jezebel piece, the name of this man’s victim is not mentioned once. The details of the crime – which are horrific – are entirely obscured. Then again, the purpose of the piece is not to pay homage to Ebony Williams or the countless other girls like her whose lives were ended cruelly, brutally, at the hands of men.

At the heart of this piece is a “story” about how the convicted murderer was “hurt” when Laverne Cox and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project retracted previous public support for him after the gruesome nature of his crime was brought, once more, to the public’s attention: “[Cathy Brennan] publicized that Blast had been convicted for the murder of [. . .] Ebony Williams.”

The writer puts this information forth as though the story hasn’t been public record since 1993 (which it has), as though the interview subject was “mysteriously imprisoned” (which he wasn’t), as though anyone with internet access couldn’t Google the subject’s name and find countless documents detailing the crime (which they could), alongside a lengthy New York Times piece about his relationship with The Zodiac Killer.

The writer then notes that the convicted “was threatened and insulted online and received hate mail on the inside calling her a freak and woman hater . . .”

We’re supposed to feel bad about this. We’re supposed to feel sorry for this man because he was “insulted online.” And really, if we’re going to start filling online publications with “human interest” stories about people who were “insulted online,” then there will be no fucking room left for any other news.

Furthermore, we’re supposed to feel that he’s the victim of Cathy Brennan? Are you fucking serious? Laverne Cox withdrew public support for this man because despite Cox’s desire to make sad puppy dogs out of violent males who “feel like women,” even Cox couldn’t stomach the details of what this man did to Ebony Williams. Even Laverne-#Ilovemenbuthatepatriarchy-Cox didn’t want to align himself with this male person’s heinous crime.

But let’s blame Cathy Brennan. This writer’s purpose isn’t about advocating for prisoners’ rights, about critiquing the prison industrial complex, it’s about showing her allegiance to the bullshit notion that feminists (I mean the kind who advocate for and care about female human beings) are the cause of all the pain and suffering poor, poor men who feel like ladies endure. And it’s about ensuring that “thought crimes” – such as acknowledging that trans women are actually male — are more offensive to us as a society than “actual crimes” – like raping, murdering, and burning children.

The real purpose of the Jezebel piece is to vilify women who call bullshit on people like the article’s subject. If this wasn’t, in fact, the purpose then there’d be no reason to mention Cathy Brennan.

In the Jezebel piece, the murderer discusses his self-described “elation” when he found out Laverne Cox and the SRLP were going to “be” his “voice.” The world was going to hear my words, he writes.

Mind you, there was no one to be Ebony Williams’ voice, nobody to hear her words. Then again, she was just a girl.

The convicted then expresses how crestfallen he was when TERFS [. . .] started a smear campaign calling me a rapist.

I know that I now live in a world where logic is not terribly en vogue, but when you’ve been convicted in a court of law of RAPE, it’s not a fucking “smear campaign” when someone calls you a rapist. Like, calling Jefferey Dahmer a cannibal isn’t a “smear campaign.” Calling Ted Bundy a “serial killer” isn’t besmirching his character. If you killed people and consumed their body parts, you’re a fucking cannibal. If you raped a child, you’re a fucking rapist. It’s not conjecture. It’s fact.

And if what makes one a TERF is acknowledging that it’s reprehensible, sickening, and incomprehensibly repulsive to make a folk hero of a man who raped and murdered a child then I’m happy to be a TERF.

The writer of the Jezebel article, however, wants us all to know that she is not a TERF. She tells us this by giving this criminally minded, murderous, person a platform to obsess over Cathy Brennan (how feminist! how responsible!), a woman who has absolutely nothing to do with this person’s crime or case.

The writer wants you to know that, unlike Cathy Brennan, she will happily defer to a child murderer, who is male, for insight on what makes one a feminist:

How do you think transphobia shaped the way Cathy Brennan described you – or the danger she claimed that you posed? Would you call her a feminist?

Let’s take a moment to let this sink in. Really sink in. Here a writer for a so-called feminist publication is encouraging a violent, gang affiliated, MtT, who, by all legal accounts, participated in the rape and murder of a child, to ruminate on his feelings about a woman who, in his warped little mind, has “wronged” him. In the mind of this person, Cathy Brennan, and not his heinous actions, are the cause of his suffering.

The writer, vis-a-vis Jezebel, vis-à-vis Gawker Media, suggests that it is not the facts of the crime itself, not the fact that Ebony Williams was raped and murdered and burned, that suggest this person “poses a danger,” but Cathy Brennan who suggests this person “poses a danger.”

And, ironically (or not so ironically), in bringing Brennan up repeatedly in the course of the interview, stoking the flames of the interviewee’s irrational ire, the writer poses a danger to Brennan.

Oh, and then, the writer asks this “man who identifies as a woman” whether or not he thinks Brennan is a feminist, as if his answer should matter to the reader.

I, for one, do not care what this man, complicit in the death of Ebony Williams, thinks of another woman, thinks of feminism. I do not take my political worldview from unrepentant men who participate in brutalizing and murdering girl children. And I certainly don’t get my feminist theory from fucking Jezebel.

She is a monster, the convicted says of Cathy Brennan.

[She] is not a feminist, the murder and rapist says. I am a feminist. I am against women being harmed. I am against women being raped.

And we are to believe he is against these things, just as we are to believe he is a woman.

Ebony Williams, sadly, wasn’t around for his change of heart. Ebony Williams didn’t encounter the womanly, feminist version of this man. In the course of her devastatingly short lifetime, I’d hazard that Ebony Williams didn’t meet many nice feminist men like the one who raped her and placed her body beneath a bridge to be burnt like so much garbage.

As for Cathy Brennan, her crime was daring to bring up Ebony Williams just as LGBT media and trans activist groups were in the process of canonizing her murderer.

Because this, apparently, is what we do now: if someone who identifies as “trans” has to face consequences for an unethical or illegal action, we make saints of them. If said “trans” person is a “trans woman” we automatically interpret their deserved consequence as “persecution.” In this way, trans women – even the ones who straight up murder people – benefit from male privilege. I mean, this gratuitous display of moral and ethical exemption has never been extended to women and girls.

Also, if “feminist publications” wish to extend their sincerest sympathies to people in prison, there are lots and lots of women in prison as a result of abusive spouses and boyfriends, lots of young women behind bars as a result of long histories of sexual abuse, lots of women serving out grim sentences because they were trafficked by men. There are lots of girls who, unlike Ebony Williams, survived adolescence and ended up incarcerated because they were societal throwaways.

But Jezebel isn’t interested in “being the voice” of those women.

So fuck Jezebel, and fuck their parent company, Gawker Media.

For my small part, I’ll be encouraging those I know to stop reading and sharing articles from these sites. I’ll tell anyone who will listen that Jezebel doesn’t care about girls like Ebony Williams, that Jezebel has a vested interest in encouraging violent males to target women who disagree with their brand of “feminism.” And I’d encourage any well-intentioned feminist reader of this blog to do the same.

  1. Reblogged this on phonaesthetica and commented:
Just when you thought Jezebel, of Gawker media, couldn’t go any lower, its writers fawn all over a child rapist/murderer – and encourage his delusional ruminations about a feminist who had nothing to do with his case.

  2. I remember reading about Ebony Williams’s murder in Jonathan Kozol’s book “Amazing Grace.” I have NO sympathy for anyone who would do something like that to a helpless child! I don’t give a sh*t if the murderer identifies as transgender.

  3. God, this is so messed up…

I’ve always had a wrong gut feeling about Jezebel from the start. Mainly because Gawker have a pornographic subsidiary.

But yeah. This is just sad.

  4. The jezebel article is really twisted. The way they made what happened to the girl seem like it’s not important was disturbing and Blast is a member of one of the most organized and largest gangs across the US. They aren’t crackerjack kids. I am shocked they let a convicted gang member serving time publicly declare how much they dislike CB like that. It’s wreckless. What were they thinking?

  5. I think this speaks for itself:

Blast – born Luis Morales – says guards at Attica allowed him to get a Scorpion tattoo on his face, signifying the month of his marriage to Seda last June. “I can honestly say that my sweet serial killer is a lady’s man now,” Blast wrote. “Only if I was a real woman I could bring about little future serial killers to terrorize NYC like my husband did. How [New Yorkers] would of loathed the Zodiac Children.

  6. Blast was in isolation because he was a child rapist and killer. Those guys get raped, tortured, and killed in the prison population because even their fellow prisoners can’t stomach their crimes. It wasn’t about being trans.

  7. Oh, and I have to add that the racism of the Jezebel piece boggles my mind. Morales was a member of the white-supremacist Latin Kings, and he killed a black girl. According to them it’s “feminist” to advocate for him.

  8. I know very little about the law, but I believe a case could be made against the author of this horrifying piece of “journalism” and Gawker on the grounds of endangering Cathy Brennan’s life.
Psycos like this always have psycho fans (not to mention his gang affiliations!) who now have this utter waste of human skin painting a target on to a named woman.

  9. I agree with you completely. I only want to point out that Blast was not convicted of rape (though he did likely rape the poor victim) he was convicted of murder and manslaughter. I only point this out because this kind of unintended error will be used by males to “prove” that we’re just lying harpies.

  10. They have now edited the piece to include Ebony’s name. I went to look for the original version and got an error message from the Internet Archive- “Sorry. This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine.” (URL of specific article in question).

  11. Publications like Jezebel exist, essentially, to promote women’s right and freedom to be men’s whores and to call this “feminism.” While deferring, always, to what men-who-feel-like-women say feminism is. Including men who rape, murder and dispose of female bodies like garbage. I mean, why not? It’s perfectly consistent with this brand of feminism to ask a rapist male what is, and isn’t, feminism.

Aviva Stahl — the woman who conducted the interview and wrote the article — is a very stupid person. So, this is an excellent follow-up to your last excellent blog post about stupidity, Augustus. It demonstrates how unchecked stupidity easily (inevitably?) intersects with evil.

I’m relieved, though, that so many of the commenters over at Jezebel aren’t buying it. Even the ones who still — dutifully and idiotically — say “she” when referring to this white-supremacist murderer of a small black girl. Even THEY are sickened by a so-called activist fawning over an incarcerated, female-hating sociopath. That’s OK with Stahl though — she can just call them all TERFs, and then call it a day. Which, from taking a quick look at her Twitter account, is exactly what she’s done.

One comment I read over there succinctly cuts through all the crap: “this article is trash about trash for trash.”

    1. I spent many years loudly criticizing Jezebel for their heinous use of sleazy rape stories for clickbait to no avail. They are truly greedy, soulless, money-grubbing scumbags and I’m not at all surprised they are caping for a child killer for clicks. They know exactly what they are doing.

It’s no different than my local paper trolling for outrage clicks by ending a story about a little girl who was stabbed at elementary school by a psychotic little boy with a sappy paragraph about how everyone is very concerned for the poor little stabber’s future. The media has sunk waaaay too low and now blatantly supporting the perp in a crime to troll the audience is a thing even in little po-dunk newspapers. It’s morally reprehensible, but pissing people off is where the internet money is these days so we get writers like the this Jezebel shill who are somehow able to put aside their human decency and still somehow sleep at night after writing such manipulative trash.

They only call Jezebel feminist because Gawker knew feminism was a hot internet topic and heavily Googled keyword when they were just a start-up. I do think in the early days their writers were more genuinely trying to write for a female audience, but over time calling it “feminist” just allowed them to run porny stories by Hugo Scumbag about fisting and rape fantasies under the guise of being sex-poz. They were never a real feminist site. You can read interviews with the people that own Gawker Media and their utter lack of humanity and slimy, sociopathic worldview will turn your stomach.

Now I just don’t click or link to their crap. It is the most effective way of expressing dissent these days – anything else just sends them more traffic and makes them more money. They want people pissed off and writing about it (I’m glad this writer did respond though, so not criticizing her) because otherwise they get no attention and no attention means less money.

They and Salon and a lot of other formerly decent publications have just stooped lower they I ever thought they could – I’ll never click on Salon again after they published the recent pedo apologist nonsense. Writing horrible things that piss people off has been incentivized and monetized – an article is worth nothing if it doesn’t “go viral” and get people fighting in the comments and linking.

It’s such a depressing and shitty way to write news – it’s also one of the reasons that even mainstream media is playing bizzaro world with trans stories, dispensing with any pretense of objectivity in favor of the Orwellian 2+2=5 approach. I have a journalism degree and don’t work in the industry because I would be ashamed to participate in this sort of manipulative bullshittery. These media companies really need to get hit where it hurts: in the traffic.

They have figured out that being assholes gets them more attention than being decent and people need to stand up and say, “We are onto you. We will not be manipulated into supporting reprehensible things by your clickbait trolling. We will not send you traffic. We will not link to your shit stories. We will crush you the way good people throughout history have crushed bullies: by taking away their power to manipulate, by taking away the thing they most desire – attention.”

So, f-you Jezebel and the writer of this piece clickbait trash. When I first read about Ebony Williams, I literally got down on the floor and wept. It’s the natural reaction to such tragedy and to a young girl’s life being snuffed out over male gangland bullshit. A child who didn’t get treated well when she was alive and is now being trashed in death and her murderer elevated by a so-called feminist. For shame.

      1. I didn’t know this about the clickbait thing. That they’re doing the stuff on purpose. Although I’m aware of the’s pedofest. I recently heard of something called donotlink where you can put a link in your blog that will take people to site, for instance so they can see how terrible it is. But I believe the site then does not register a click. Maybe somebody else who is more familiar with this can explain it. Maybe Hypotaxis can do a current post explaining this. Because yes I agree we need to deny companies that are making money off of our outrage at their intentionally inhuman crap those clicks/money. A kind of cyber-boycott.

Also I read this post when it first came out. It is phenomenal. Especially all the information in it. I pasted a link to it on the 4thwavenow blog tonight. 😊

  12. Jezebel is owned and run by a rich white gay man who loves his rent boys. That’s why the site is so misogynistic and pro “sex work”. It’s sick. It’s a pro sex industry site and has no interest in promoting the best interests of women and girls, especially the poor and marginalized. Also, the trans women I know are not represented by the lunatics who claim to speak for the trans community. And many of those lunatics are not even trans themselves, but are trying to prove how “pure” they are by protesting vulva-cupcake decorating parties and the vicious claim that women menstruate. Biological femaleness has always been a crime, and now trans “allies” and activists are promoting that narrative, erasing women and little girls like Ebony. This just enrages me.

  13. Powerful article, rock solid logic, and keen analysis. Glad I don’t intersect with Jezebel and their faux feminism. How disgusting to repeatedly paint a target on a specific, named feminist not even involved in any way with the murderer’s case— whether one agrees with her or not. Me? I think Ms Brennan is a superhero and I would be so honored and delighted to meet her one day. I have met many famous people, including the sitting President of the USA, but meeting Brennan would far surpass all of them. She is so brave to keep speaking truth in a world of spin.

  14. Weird – this is like a very extreme version of something I have experienced. In high school I was molested by a teacher who now dresses as a woman all the time. He used to dress and behave like a man and was perverted towards many of the students. Then he started to grow a pony tail and people were like “ugh, now he’s even creepier”. Gradually then he changed his clothes – they became more and more womanly, but it wasn’t apparent then why. Now he has his long hair dyed and styled like a woman, he wears dresses, make up all the time – he acts like a woman. Full-time cross-dressing. He acts as if he is soft and gentle. He meets with his other cross-dressing friend in cafés in the local area, and they sit and talk over coffee, behaving like two ‘normal’ sweet women.

I promised myself at some point the next time I saw him I would ask him loudly in front of everyone why the hell he molested me 8/9 years ago. I decided maybe also I would kick him in the balls depending on if I felt up to it. Now it’s awkward because A. it will look like I’m being trans-phobic – for lack of perhaps a more appropriate word relating to cross-dressing/gender fluidity. B. His fucking behavior is so in denial/oblivious/contradicting of his past.

I think an issue is these kinds of people can be very, very good liars. They prey on good people giving them the benefit of the doubt. I think also it crosses through the ‘usual’ categories we are used to and we think – how the fuck can I act in this situation?

My younger sister, who hates him as much as me but is diplomatic, said “maybe he did all those things because he was so frustrated by having to be someone he was not, and now he’s stopped”. Obviously not identifying with your gender does NOT equate to pedophilia, in no WAY does it correlate and that’s definitely not what my sister is insinuating. But at the same time, what the fuck is going on here? Has he stopped? Does he want to be good? Is it an act? Is this particular bastard’s cross-dressing an extension of his perversion (even though cross-dressing alone does not have to be a form of perversion, it’s fine obviously)? Or, is it that it is simply a coincidental trait…

The issue also is that we have trouble accepting a ‘woman’ could do something so evil. What do these two situations tell us about how we think about men, women and acts of evil? Imagine these two men as men – they seem very guilty. Shift your perception to think of them as women – some people get confused, start to doubt their guilt more, see them as vulnerable and almost want to protect them. And of course pedophiles and rapists then can use this as a way to disassociate themselves from, or even deny, their crimes. My experience with the person who violated my space/body shows me that these sorts of people can be ruthless and incredibly convincing liars …

    1. JHKKJ, your former teacher’s cross dressing is absolutely, without a doubt, one hundred percent, an extension of what he did to you and others years ago. It’s not a coincidence.

It’s an expression of his many perversions, which are all connected/correlated — the transgenderist narratives and the lying, impersonation, narcissism, rapism, pedophilia and misogyny. This isn’t to say that each of these equates with the other, only that they do seem to cluster together, obviously because they come from the same source: sexually deranged male supremacy.

  15. These fools at Jezebel asked this rapist murderer:

“Last year SRLP curated a series of video interviews about prison abolition called “no one is disposable.” In your view, what would a world look like that adhered to that principle—that no one is disposable?”

He literally killed a little girl, tortured her before doing so, raped her, and Jezebel wants to know what he thinks the world would look like if no one is disposable? Well for one he might have chosen not to dispose of that little girl by putting her body in a card board box, getting his buddies to help carry it to be burned like garbage after they stomped on her throat. There is not clearer definition of disposable than what he did. Oy vey turns out women really ARE stupid. lol. Women at Jezebel are f*cking idiots. Hopefully someday they will meet some nice guy like their shero and that he might meet some nice men in prison who are just like him. My wish list.
